Abstract

A Study on the average walking speed of salatiga city residents in public open spaces

Abstract: This study aims to determine the average walking speed of Salatiga City residents. The method used is a descriptive quantitative approach with observational techniques involving 132 respondents. Data were collected through surveys and analyzed using descriptive statistical methods. The results indicate that 72.73% of respondents exhibited a high walking speed (1.39 m/s and above), while 27.27% were categorized as having a moderate walking speed (0.12–1.38 m/s). No respondents were found in the low walking speed category (0.1–0.11 m/s). There was no significant difference in walking speed between genders, suggesting that the primary factors influencing walking speed are physical condition, age, and injury. The study concludes that walking speed can serve as an indicator of health, and physical activities such as walking contribute positively to physical fitness and reduce the risk of degenerative diseases. The people of Salatiga demonstrate a high interest in utilizing public spaces for physical activities, which can potentially support disease prevention efforts.
