THE SEMIOTIC RIFFATERRE: LOVE IN JOHANN CHRISTOPH FRIEDRICH VON SCHILLER’S “AN DIE FREUDE”

Abstract


This research aims to describe (1) the heuristic reading, (2) indirect expressions: displacing of meaning, distorting of meaning, and creating of meaning, (3) the hermeneutic reading, (4) matrix, model, and variants, also (5) hypogram of ‘An die Freude’. This research use semiotic approach. Technik of data analysis is descriptive qualitative The object of this research is Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller’s ‘An die Freude’. The data collection were done by doing observation and heuristic and hermeneutic reading. The instrument of this research is human instrument. The validity of the data were obtained through semantic validity and reinforced of the expert judgement validity. Reliability are intrarater and interrater. The results of the research are as follow. (1) The heuristic reading describe how wonderful the happiness is, brotherhood, and the invitation to love people sincerely without distinction. (2) Indirect expressions include: (a) displacing of meaning: simile, metaphor, parable epics, personification, allegory, metonymy, and sinekdoke, (b) distorting of meaning: ambiguities and contradiction, (c) creating of meaning: rhyme and enjambment. (3) The hermeneutic reading show the euphoria experienced by Schiller for getting love from the devotees and friends in Saxony. Schiller realized that the true happiness is when everyone love each other sincerely and always believing in God. (4) The matrix of this poetry is love, the model of this poetry is happiness and the variants of this poetry are contained in the stanza -1, -2, -3, -4, -7. (5) The potential hypogram in this poetry is description of matrix, which is love. The actual hypogram in this poetry is the creation backgrounds of the poetry, which are the reign of King Karl Eugen and when Schiller moved to Saxony.
