THE CHARACTERISTICS AND PSYCHOLOGICAL PROBLEMS OF THE MAIN CHARACTER HARRY IN HERMANN HESSE’S DER STEPPENWOLF: PSYCHOANALYTIC APPROACH

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe the characteristics of character, psychological problems, and effort to solve Harry’s psychological problems as main character in a romance entitled Der Steppenwolf by Hermann Hesse with the psychoanalytic approach of Sigmund Freud. The data source was “Der Steppenwolf”, a romance by Hermann Hesse, published at 1927 by Suhrkamp Verlag Berlin. The data were collected by employing the techniques of reading and note!taking. The data analyses occupied descriptive qualitativ technique. The validity of the data was obtained through semantic validity and expert judgement. The reliability of the data was attained through intrarater and interrater reliability. The research showed that characteristics of character consists of outer characteristic, social characteristic, behavior, thinking and feeling. The psychological problems consists of depressive disorders, bipolar disorders and anxiety disorders. The efforts of the character Harry in his psychological problems to solve consists of displacement, regression, repression, reaction formation, sublimation, Rationalization, fixation, apathy.
