THE EFFECTIVENESS OF PORTFOLIO IN THE TEACHING OF GERMAN WRITING SKILL AMONG THE GRADE XI STUDENTS OF SMA NEGERI 1 JETIS BANTUL
Abstract
The objective of this research is to find out (1) the significance difference of German writing skills of the
grade XI students of SMA Negeri 1 Jetis Bantul who are taught by using portfolio assignments and those who are taught by using conventional method and (2) the effectiveness of using portfolio assignments in teaching German writing skills. There were two variables in the research that are the use of portfolio assignments as the independent variable and the German writing skills as the dependent variable. This research is categorized as a quasi-experimental research. The subjects of the research were 101 students of grade XI IPS of SMA Negeri 1 Jetis Bantul. The sampling technique was random sampling. Based on the random sampling, the experimental group was the XI IPS 2 (20 students) and the control group was the XI IPS 3 (20 students). There were two validity tests used in this research that were the content validity and the construct validity. The results were the R-test = 0,876 > R-table = 0,444. So, the results were valid. The data were analyzed by using T-test. The results of the data analysis shows that the T-test value (7.098) is higher than the T-table value (2.021) at the significance level of a = 0.05 and db = 38. Therefore, it can be concluded that (1) there is a significance difference of German writing skills between the students who are taught by using portfolio assignments and those who are taught by using conventional method and (2) using portfolio assignments is more effective in teaching German writing skills of the grade XI students of SMA Negeri 1 Jetis, with the effectiveness score was 7,1%. result of the groups showed that the mean of experimental group was 69,05, whereas the control group was 67,00. Therefore, the teaching and learning process by using portfolio assignments is more effective than the teaching and learning process by using conventional method.
