THE USE OF PARTS OF THE BODIES IN GERMAN’S PROVERBS AND THEIR EQUIVALENTS IN BAHASA INDONESIA

Abstract

This study aimed to determine (1) the similarities and differences in the form of a figurative element name parts of the bodies German’s proverbs and their equivalents in bahasa Indonesia, (2) cultural elements underlying the similarities and differences between German’s proverbs and their equivalents in bahasa Indonesia. Primary research sources used in this research that the book das kleine Sprichwörterbuch and secondary research sources Duden Deutsche Redewendungen. Indonesia proverb books used in this study named Peribahasa. Data obtained using the tapping technique (read) and recorded. The result of the research uses translational identity method. The results show that: (1) there are five German’s proverbs which have similarities figurative elements parts of the bodies and their equivalents in bahasa Indonesia, six German’s proverbs meaning have similarities with Indonesia’s proverbs, but in Indonesia’s proverb there is no figurative elements parts of the bodies German’s proverb which has the meaning of the proverb Indonesian equation, but different figurative elements, and (2) there is an element of cultural similarities and differences underlying the German’s- and Indonesia’s proverbs. There are four cultural backgrounds those proverbs namely eating and drinking habits, mindset, customs, and the state of nature.
