TEACHER’S ROLE IN THE CLASS DEVELOPMENT AS THE LABORATORY OF DEMOCRACY THROUGH CIVIC EDUCATION SUBJECT IN SMP NEGERI 2 DEPOK SLEMAN YOGYAKARTA

Abstract


This study has three aims: First, civics teacher's role in developing the Class as the Laboratory of Democracy through Civic Education Study. Secondly, the obstacles encountered by the teacher in creating Civic Education learning environment that includes democratic values in the classroom. Last third, teacher efforts overcome the existing obstacles in creating Civic Education learning environment that includes democratic values in the classroom.

This type of research is descriptive qualitative phenomenological approach. Determination of the study subjects is determined by purposive. The study subjects are Civic Education teachers of SMP Negeri 2 Depok, Sleman, Yogyakarta. Data collection technique usages are observation, interview, and documentation which its validity is checked through triangulation.

The results showed that: First, the role of the teacher as learning resource, facilitator, manager, demonstrator, motivator and evaluator in the class development as the Laboratory of Democracy through Civic Education subject can be seen through three indicators, that are the democratic behavior of the teacher in the learning process, the teacher in creating environment of democratic class, teachers in choosing the appropriate models, methods, and media. Second, the obstacles faced by the teacher in the class development as the laboratory of democracy through Civic Education learning subject are learners’ factor such as the lack of interest of the learners towards Civic Education learning subject, lack of interest of learners to read, less active in seeking support information/news, and also the learners less proactive and embarrassed to ask. Then, external factors are the lack of supporting school infrastructure, and the allocation of the time is very limited. Last third, the efforts done by the Civic Education teachers in overcoming the obstacles in classroom development as the laboratory of democracy is asking the students actively reading and searching for information, building the students’ character to be brave, responsible, independent, and mutual respect, and for obstacles beyond the learners, teachers need to be more creative, teachers must be able to manage the time effectively and efficiently.
