THE PROCESS OF THE MAIN CHARACTER’S CULTURAL SHOCK IN ANJA TUCKERMANN’S ADILE EIN MӒDCHEN AUS ISTANBUL

Abstract


This study was aimed to describe the process of the main character’s cultural shock in Anja Tuckermann’s “Adile ein Mädchen aus stanbul”.The research approach was objective approach using the culture shock process theory by Kalvero Oberg. The research data was words, phrases, and sentences in Adile ein Mädchen aus Istanbul by Anja Tuckermann which contains elements of culture shock. The data source was Adile ein Mädchen aus Istanbul published by Klett K inderbuch Verlag Leipzig in 2011 and consists of 87 pages. This study is a descriptive qualitative study. The data was collected by reading and note-taking technique. The validity of the research data was semantic validity and expert judgment. The reliability was intrarater and interrater reliabilities.The research showed that the main character experienced four process of culture shock, which are: (1) Phase of joy and optimism (honeymoon) which are marked by: (a) Adile’s interest and joy about Germany, (b) Adile’s joy when she reunited with her family. (2) Phase of crisis experienced by Adile, which are (a) the difficulty in adapting, (b) the difficulty in communicating, (c) the disappointment and the rejection toward the new culture, (d) the frustration which marked by insomnia, (e) Adile’s hostility to the locals. (3) Phase of adjustment and recovery toward the condition of Germany. (4) Phase of mastery which is marked by Adile which felt comfortable by living in Germany. Keywords: novel, culture shock, main character
