THE EFFORT OF IMPROVING THE GERMAN SPEAKING SKILL THROUGH THE COOPERATIVE LEARNING OF THE TALKING STICK TECHNIQUE FOR THE STUDENTS OF GRADE XI OF THE IPS 3 SMA NEGERI 5 YOGYAKARTA

Abstract


This research aims to improve (1) the activity of the students of class XI IPS 3 SMA Negeri 5 Yogyakarta and (2) German speaking skill of the students of class XI IPS 3 SMA Negeri 5 Yogyakarta. This study belongs to the classroom action research type. Subjects of this study are the students of class XI IPS 3 SMA Negeri 5 Yogyakarta which consists of sixteen students. This research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycles consisted of the stage of planning, implementation of actions, observation, and reflection. Data collection technique of this study were classroom observation, interviews, filed notes, questionnaire, documentation, and German speaking test. Those data was then analyzed by using the descriptive qualitative approach. Results of this study show that talking stick technique can improve the activity of the students class XI IPS 3 SMA Negeri 5 Yogyakarta. This can be seen from the fact that the students are bold to give their opinion in German. Moreover, the students are more active in the learning process and they even ask for the evaluation test schedule to be conducted earlier. From the German speaking skill point of view, the mean of students of class XI IPS 3 SMA Negeri 5 Yogyakarta’s speaking test mark gets higher from 62,3 to 78,64.
