A CHARACTERIZATION ANALYSIS OF THE MAIN CHARACTER AND SETTING OF THE PLAY ‘MUTTER COURAGE UND IHRE KINDER’ BY BERTOLT BRECHT

Abstract

 

The purpose of this research was to describe characterization of the main character, setting and the relation between character and setting of the play ‘Mutter Courage und ihre Kinder’ by Bertolt Brecht through theory of Marquaß’s strukturalism. The source is the play ‘Mutter Courage und ihre Kinder’ by Bertolt Brecht which was published in 1997. The data were collected through reading and note-taking. The data analysis occupied descriptive qualitative technique. The validity of the data was obtained through the semantic validity and expert judgement. The reliability of the data was attained through the intrarater and interrater reliability. The result of the study showed that (1) the characterization of the main character were courage, materialism and indepence. Mutter Courage’s constellation is Partnerschaft . The conception figures were static, closed and typical. (2) The setting was consisted of two functions, they were; (a) a place which could cause an event are road, kitchen, battlefield and farmer house; (b) a place

which could describe the character indirectly that consisted of road, kitchen, battlefield and farmer house. The time setting was consisted of four functions (a) historische Sicht  which was the Thirty Years War, (b) im Lebenabschnit der Figur  which was the Mutter Courages middle age, (c) im Tageslauf which  consisted of evening and dawn, (d) im Jahreslauf which was  the beginning of 1624, 1625, 1625 and 1626, three years later, in the same year, winter and January 1636. (3) The study found the connection between the characterization and the setting. The Thirty Years War also had an influence on Mutter Courage characterization.
