THE CHARACTERIZATION OF THE MAIN CHARACTER AND THE RELATION TO THE SETTING OF PATRICK SÜSKIND’S “DAS PARFUM”

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe the characterization of main character, setting, and the relation between characterization of the main character and setting in a “Novel” entitled “Das Parfum” by Patrick Süskind with the objektive approach. The data source was “Das Parfum”, an “Novel” by Patrick Süskind , published by Diogenes Verlag AG Zurich at 1994. The data were collected by employing the techniques of reading and note‐taking. The data analyses occupied descriptive qualitativ technique. The validity of the data was obtained through semantic validity and expert judgement. The reliability of the data was attained through intrarater and interrater reliability. The results showed characterization of main character as follows. 1. The outward characteristics: an ugly Grenouille, little and bent, was dressed in filthy and torn. Social traits: hardworking and love to learn techniques to make perfume. He does not have good social relationships. Behavior: Grenouille has a habit of sniffing and fantasize. He had difficulty speaking colloquially. The thoughts and feelings: resolute to create the scent of human imitation is the scent of virgin girls. 2. Setting of place the Roman Das Parfum Patrick Süskind's: allowing the occurrence of events, showing the mood, as symbole and showing Characterization of figures. Setting time: phase in a day, phase of the year, phase of life of a character, and phase of history. 3. The relationship between background and characterization of the main character. City of Paris as the city most rotten in Europe affect the characterization of the figures in the Roman Grenouillle Das Parfum work of Patrick Süskind.
