THE MAIN CHARACTER’S CONFLICT IN BERTOLT BRECHT’S DIE DREI GROSCHEN OPER

Abstract

This observation has the purpose to describe (1) a conflict that occurs with the main character, (2) the causes of the conflict that occur to the main character within the Die Dreigroschenoper drama script. Data resources in this observation are the Bertolt Brecht’s drama script Die Dreigroschenoper that was published by Suhrkamp Verlag in 1928. The data was obtained by reading and recording techniques. The observation is concerning descriptive qualitative observation. The data validity is using semantic validity and is reinforced by the expert judgment validity. The reliability factors that are used in this observation are intrarater and interrater reliability. The results of this observation are: (1) the conflict that occurs to the main character contains internal conflict and external conflict. The internal conflict consists of worries, expectation, hesitation, fear, hatred, willingness to get something, desperation, and disappointment. The external conflict consists of authority contradiction, conflict because of the circumstances, contradiction with someone’s kindness, contention in romance, personal interests, dissent, tenure dispute, friend betrayal, and anger towards all people. 2) The causes of the conflict are influenced by some aspects, there are: (a) a tension expression, (b) a purpose of fulfillment, (c) a lack of fulfillment, (d) a possibility that someone may prevent the other from reaching their goals, (e) an interdependence.
