THE FUNCTION OF HÄNSEL UND GRETEL AND DIE GÄNSEMAGD FROM GRIMMS: A PROPP’S STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS

Abstract

This study was aimed to describe (1) the functions, (2) folktale’s structure scheme,and (3) the sphere of action in folktales Hänsel und Gretel and die Gänsemagd. Data sources of this study wereHänsel und Gretel and die Gänsemagd from the book die Schönsten Märchen der Brüder Grimm.Data collection was taken through read-note technique. Data were analized by descriptive qualitative techniques. The data reliability used were intrarater and interrater. The results of this study were: (1) the number of function from Hänsel und Gretel were 18. The the number of function from die Gänsemagd were 18. (2) The scheme structure of folktale Hänsel und Gretel and die Gänsemagd were divided into 3 parts, which are, the beginning, the middle, and the end. (3) The functionof folktale Hänsel und Gretel was distributed into 5 sphere of actions. The functions of sphere of actions in die Gänsemagd were distributed into 6 sphere of actions.
