THE PERSONALITY OF THE MAIN CHARACTER MICHAEL BERG IN BERNHARD SCHLINK’S DER VORLESER: AN ANALYSIS OF PSYCHOLOGY OF LITERATURE
Abstract
This study aims to describe the structure of personality, the dynamics of personality, and the development of personality from main character Michael Berg in a novel entitled Der Vorleser by Bernhard Schlink with the psychology approach of Sigmund Freud. The data source was “Der Vorleser”, a novel by Bernhard Schlink, published at 1995 by Diogenes Verlag Zürich. The data were collected by employing the techniques of reading and note!taking. The data analyses occupied descriptive qualitativ technique. The validity of the data was obtained through semantic validity and expert judgement. The reliability of the data was attained through intrarater and interrater reliability. The study showed that structure of personality consists of Id, Ego, and Superego. The dynamics of personality such as life instinct, death instinct, neurosis anxiety, realistic anxiety,and moral anxiety. The development of personality was defence mechanism consist of Displacement, Regression, Repression, Reaction formation, and Rationalization.
