THE CHARACTERIZATION AND SETTING OF HEINRICH BÖLL’S “ALS DER KRIEG ZU ENDE WAR”

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe the characterization, setting, and the relation between characterization and setting in a “Erzählung” entitled “Als der Krieg zu Ende war” by Heinrich Böll with the objektive approach. The data source was “Als der Krieg zu Ende war”, an “Erzählung” by Heinrich Böll, published by Verlag Kiepenheuer in Köln at 1984. The data were collected by employing the techniques of reading and note!taking. The data analyses occupied descriptive qualitativ technique. The validity of the data was obtained through semantic validity and expert judgement. The reliability of the data was attained through intrarater and interrater reliability. The research showed that characterization of character consists of characterization, konsellation and concept. Setting consists of place and time. the relation between characterization and setting is World War II and the demage that occurred in Germany influence on the characterization in the “Erzählung Als der Krieg zu Ende war” by Heinrich Böll.
