DIRECTIVE SPEECH ACTS IN FRIEDRICH DÜRRENMATT’S DER BESUCH DER ALTEN DAME

Abstract

This research is aimed to describe (1) the form of directive speech and (2) the function directive speech acts in drama entitled der Besuch der alten Dame by Friedrich Dürrenmatt. The source of this research is der Besuch der alten Dame Drama. The data is all the directive speech acts between Clara and Ill, Clara and Mayor, also Clara and Teacher in that drama. This research is descriptive qualitative. The data gathering technique uses reading and note-taking technique. The validity test uses semantic, then reliability test uses interrater and intrarater. The data analysis technique uses distributional (agih) and identity (padan) method.The research results are (1) there are three forms of directive speech acts between Clara and Ill. They are 13 data of literal direct speech (direkte wörtliche Strategie), one data of non-literal direct speech (direkte nichtwörtliche Strategie), and one data of literal indirect speech (indirekte wörtliche Strategie). There are three forms of directive speech between Clara and Mayor. They are 5 data of literal direct speech (direkte wörtliche Strategie), one data of non-literal direct speech (direkte nichtwörtliche Strategie), and one data of literal indirect speech (indirekte wörtliche Strategie). There is one form of directive speech between Clara and Teacher which is literal direct speech (direkte wörtliche Strategie). (2) There are five functions of directive speech between Clara and Ill. They are two data of requesting function, nine data of questioning function, two data of commanding function, one data offorbidding function, and one data of advising function. After that, there are four functions of directive speech function. They are one data of requesting function, three data of asking function, two data of commanding function, and one data of advising function. Then, there are three functions of directive speech between Clara and Teacher. They are two data of requesting function, two data of questioning function, and one data of commanding function.
