THE FULFILLMENT PROCESS OF THE NEEDS HIERARCHY OF THE TWO MAIN CHARACTERS BRIGITTE AND PAULA IN ELFRIEDE JELINEK’S DIE LIEBHABERINNEN HOLISTICS-DYNAMICS PSYCHOLOGYCAL REVIEW BY ABRAHAM MASLOW

Abstract

This study aims to describe the process of fulfilling the hierarchy needs of the two main characters, Brigitte and Paula, in the novel entitled Die Liebhaberinnen by Elfriede Jelinek. This research used descriptive-qualitative technique. The approach used in this study was a psychological approach by the holistic-dynamic theory of Abraham Maslow. The data were obtained by reading-record technique. The validity of the data was obtained by semantic validity and expert judgment. The reliability used was inter-rater and intra-rater reliability.The results showed that Brigitte had fulfilled the hierarchy of needs from the lowest level to the highest one namely (1) the physiological needs of marriage work, (2) the safety needs of changing appearance, doing housework, sex, pregnancy und marriage with Heinz, (3) the needs of love that was loving Heinz, (4) the needs for honor in the form of wedding plans with Heinz and confession from Susi, (5) self-actualization in the form of being Heinz's wife. Meanwhile, Paula had also fulfilled the hierarchy of needs from the lowest level to the highest one namely (1) physiological needs such as a shelter, a bag, a dress and money, (2) safety needs in the form of going to the nearest town, giving birth to her baby and  marriage with Erich, (3) needs of love in the form of loving Erich, (4) needs of honor in the form of learning sewing, being smart and being accepted by Erich, (5) self-actualization in the form of being Heinz's wife.
