THE MOTIVE OF THE MAIN CHARACTER OF EMIL SINCLAIR IN HERMANN HESSE’S DEMIAN (A PSYCHOLOGICAL LITERARY ANALYSIS)

Abstract


This study was aimed to describe: (1) the characterization and (2) the motive of the main character in Hermann Hesse’s Demian. Data sources in this study was Hermann Hesse’s Demian published in S. Ficher Berlin: 1921. To collecting the data used read and note taking technique. Data was analyzed by descriptive qualitative techniques. The validity used was schematics validity. The data reliability used were intrarater and interater. The result of this study were: (1) the main character had 7 characterizations, such as: educated, worried, from religious family, closed personality, impressionable, ignorant and high ambitious; the relation between the main character and the other character, were: the partnership, they were family, Max Demian, Frau Eva, Alfons Beck, Pistorius, and Knauer: the contradiction was Franz Kromer; the construct of the main character were dynamic, closed, and complex. (2) The main character had 15 motives from 32 actions, such as: abasement 1 action, affiliation 4 actions, counteraction 1 action, defendence 2 actions, dominance 1 action, deference 3 actions, exhibition 1 action, infavoidance 1 action, nurturance 2 actions, play 2 actions, sentience 2 actions, order 2 actions, rejection 4 actions, succorance 3 actions, understanding 1 action.
