ROLE OF CIVIC EDUCATION TEACHERS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF STUDENT COUNCIL AS A POLITICAL EDUCATION IN THE JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL OF PENGASIH DISTRICT, KULON PROGO REGENCY

Abstract


This study aimed to describe: 1) the role of civics teachers in the development of student council as a political education in all Junior High Schools of Pengasih District, Kulon Progo Regency, 2) constraints which are faced by civics teachers in the development of student council as a political education in Junior High School of Pengasih District, Kulon Progo Regency.

This research is a descriptive study and employed qualitative approach trough phenomenological method. Researcher used purposive way in determining research subject and obtained two research subjects that are the civics teachers and student union chiefs in Junior High School of Pengasih District. Data collection techniques which were used are interview and documentation.  Researcher used cross check technique to check the validity of the data. A data analysis technique that was employed in this study is inductive analysis through the steps of data reduction, categorization, presentation and drawing conclusions.

The results of this study showed that: Firstly, civics teachers in all Junior High Schools of Pengasih District, Kulon Progo Regency have performed political education development in the teaching-learning process of civics in the classroom with a variety of teaching methods. Otherwise, the role of civics teachers in all Junior High Schools of Pengasih District in developing student union as a political education has not been done because of many constraints they faced. Secondly, the constraints of civics teacher in developing student union as a political education are that some civics teachers have not understood concept of political education, the difficulty to  the values of politics to the students, the difficulty to build the courage of expressing arguments, the lack of coordination among the teachers in the school to develop student council as a political education, the lack of civics teacher attendances in each school, the lack of participation of civics teachers in student council activities and the lack of guidance on political education of the student council.
