THE DIFFERENCE IN THE SOCIAL STUDIES LEARNING ACHIEVEMENT USING THE MIND MAPPING METHOD AND THE TWO STAY TWO STRAY METHOD AMONG GRADE VIII STUDENTS OF SMPN 5 BANGUNTAPAN
Abstract
This study aimed to find out: (1) whether or not there was a significant difference in the Social Studies learning achievement using the Mind Mapping method and the Two Stay Two Stray method among Grade VIII students of SMPN 5 Banguntapan, and (2) the effectiveness of the Mind Mapping method and the Two Stay Two Stray method on the Social Studies learning achievement of Grade VIII students of SMPN 5 Banguntapan.
This was a quasi-experimental study using the pretest-posttest nonequivalent multiple group design. The population comprised all Grade VIII students of SMPN 5 Banguntapan in the 2015/2016 academic year. The sample was selected by means of the simple random sampling technique. The selected sample consisted of Grade VIII A as experimental class 1 and Grade VIII B as experimental class 2. The two classes were selected because they were equal in the learning achievement in comparison with other classes. The data were collected by observations and tests. The tests of analysis assumptions were tests of normality and homogeneity. The hypothesis testing used the t-test (independent samples t-test).
The results of the study were as follows. (1) There was a significant difference in the Social Studdies learning achievement using the Mind Mapping learning method and the Two Stay Two Stray learning method among Grade VIII students of SMPN 5 Banguntapan. This was indicated by the results of the t-test showing a significance value of 0.012 (0.012 < 0.05) and tobserved > ttable (2.581 > 2.001); therefore, Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted. The results of the calculation of the gain scores in experimental class 1 and experimental class 2 showed that experimental class 1 attained a gain score of 0.61 and experimental class 2 attained a gain score of 0.42. Therefore, it could be concluded that the gain score of class experimental class 1 was higher than that of experimental class 2 (0.61 > 0.42); therefore, Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted. (2) The Mind Mapping learning method was more effective than the Two Stay Two Stray learning method. This was indicated by the results of the t-test and the gain score.
