IMPLEMENTASI PENDIDIKAN DEMOKRASI DALAM PEMBELAJARAN IPS DI SMP DIPONEGORO MAJENANG CILACAP

Abstract


This study aims to investigate: 1) the democracy values implemented in Social Studies learning at SMP Diponegoro Majenang; 2) the Social Studies learning process oriented to democracy values at SMP Diponegoro Majenang; and 3) the facilitating and inhibiting factors in the implementation of democracy education in Social Studies learning at SMP Diponegoro Majenang. The study employed the qualitative research method using the naturalistic approach. It was conducted from December 2015 to May 2016. The informants consisted of the principal, vice principal in charge of the curriculum, the vice principal in charge of student affairs, Social Studies teachers, and several students of SMP Diponegoro Majenang. The data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. The data trustworthiness in the study was enhanced by the data triangulation technique. The data analysis in the study was the interactive model by Miles and Huberman. The results of the study are as follows. 1) The democracy values implemented in Social Studies learning at SMP Diponegoro Majenang are, among others, values of freedom, equality, togetherness, mutual trust, peaceful problem solving, tolerance, and participation. 2) The implementation of democracy education in Social Studies learning at SMP Diponegoro Majenang includes activities of planning, implementation, and evaluation. The lesson planning includes the setting of objectives, materials, methods, media, and evaluation. The learning is implemented by selecting methods and materials and providing insights supporting the inculcation of democracy values. The learning evaluation includes the evaluation of attitudes conducted through observations and by referring to attitude assessment sheets. 3) The facilitating factors in the implementation of democracy education in Social Studies learning at SMP Diponegoro Majenang include, among others, the use of relevant learning methods, smooth interactions between teachers and students, provision of motivation and rewards, and supporting school culture. The facilitating factors in the implementation of democracy education in Social Studies learning at SMP Diponegoro Majenang include, among others, students’ lack of self-confidence, their low seriousness, limited use of media, and existence of bullying actions.
