Abstract

The aims of this research are  (1)  to find out whether there are any
significant differences of the ability of reading short story texts, between students
who have attended the short story reading class using the timbal balik strategy and
students who have attended the learning process without the timbal balik strategy
for students of grade VII of SMP Negeri 1 Kasihan; and (2) to examine the
effectiveness of the  timbal  balik  strategy in the learning process of short story
reading for students of grade VII of SMP Negeri 1 Kasihan.
  This research uses quantitative method with experiments. The research
design which is used is  Pretest Posttest Control Group Design.  There are two
variables in the research, that are the timbal balik strategy as the independent and
the ability of reading short story texts as the dependent variable. Simple random
sampling  technique is used in determining the research samples. Based on that
technique, the  experiment group is conducted in class VII A while the control
group is  conducted in class VII  E. The data collection technique used in this
research is in the form of tests. The data instruments of the research are in the
form of multiple choices questions as the objective test and the questionnaires.
The validity of the instruments uses the content validity and the construct validity.
The reliability of the instruments is calculated by using the  value  of  Alpha
Cronbach. The data analysis technique which is used in this research is T-test with
a significant standard of 0,05.
  The result of the  prerequisite analysis  tests shows that both pretest and
posttest scores of the both groups are normally and homogeny distributed. Based
on the analysis of t-test, the posttest data of the ability of reading short story texts
for the control group and the experiment group are  th with 8,364; df = 60; and p
with  0,000 (p < 0,05). The result shows that there are significant differences in
reading short story texts between the students who have attended the short story
reading class using the  timbal balik strategy and students who have attended the
learning process without the  timbal balik strategy. Based on the  t-test analysis of
pretest and posttest data for the experiment group, the results are thitung with 8,969;
df = 30 and p with 0,000 (p < 0,05). The result of this research also shows that the
increasing of average scores is different between the control group and the
experiment group. The increasing of the control group’s average score is 3.6;
while the increasing of the experiment group’s average score is  17.2.  In
conclusion, the result shows that the timbal balik strategy is effective to be used in
the learning process of the short story reading.
