Abstract


This study is aimed at finding out  the differences of students’ writing ability on
rewriting a story who use story writing map strategy to students who do not use the story
writing map strategy, the effectiveness of the use of story writing map  strategy on
students’  writing abilty of rewriting  a story among the seventh grade students of  SMP
Ali Maksum, Bantul.
This study use pretest-posttest control group design. The independent variable in
this study was  story writing map  strategy, while the  dependent variable was students’
writing ability on rewriting a story. The population of this styudy was the seventh grade
students of SMP Ali Maksum, Bantul. The Sample consisted of two classes made up of
VII A classroom as a control group n VII B classroom  as an experimental group.
Random sampling technique was used in this study. The collecting data of this study was
rewriting test of a study  by the students. The instrument for collectingthe data was
writing test. A t-test was use for the analysis of this study by using computer program
called SPSS 16.
The results of this study show that there are significance differences between the
students who use story writing map strategy to students who do not use the story writing
map strategy.  It can be seen from the result of t-test where th = 1,831 > tt = 1,682 with
significance  5% (0,05) and df =42. Furthermore the e use of story writing map strategy is
effective to be used. It can be seen from th = 10.695 >tt = 1,729 with significance 5%
(0.05) and df=19
