THE CULTURAL ADAPTATION PROCESS OF THE MAIN CHARACTER OF SABINE IN SABINE KUEGLER’S “DSCHUNGELKIND”

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find and describe the cultural adaptation process of the main character, Sabine in Sabine Kuegler’s “Dschungelkind”. The approach that is used in this research is objective with the descriptive’s technique by utilizing the theory of cultural adaptation from Kim. The data collected in the form of words, phrases, and sentences in Sabine Kuegler’s “Dschungelkind” with the cultural adaptation process. The novel Dschungelkind by Sabine Kuegler was published by Droemer Knaur Verlag München in 2005 with 345 pages. The research is descriptive qualitative. The data was obtained by reading and note-taking. The validity of the data was obtained through the semantic validity and expert judgement. The reliability of the data was attained through the intrarater and interrater reliability. The study showed prepararation of change included the preparation related to science, management, physical, communication, and individual preparation. Honeymoon phase is identified by the curious feeling, interest and happiness with the new surroundings. The difficulties of frustration phase are experienced by the main character when she was in the Fayu’s environment, such as the limitations of accommodation, transportation, health facilities, incompatibility climate, different culture, and feeling frustrated because Fayu’s friend died. Readjustment phase againsts the Fayu’s culture. The Resolution phase that is experienced by the main character is a full participation to Fayu’s culture.
