THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE USE OF THE CROSSWORD PUZZLES IN THE LEARNING OF GERMAN VOCABULARY AMONG THE STUDENTS OF XI OF SMA NEGERI 1 PENGASIH OF KULON PROGO

Abstract


 

The purposes of this research are to find out (1) a significant difference between German vocabulary learning of grade XI students of SMA Negeri 1 Pengasih Kulon Progo, who are taught using crossword puzzles media and that of those who are taught with conventional media, and (2) the effectiveness of crossword puzzles media on German vocabulary learning of grade XI students ofSMA Negeri 1 Pengasih Kulon Progo. This research is a quasiexperiment, designed as the pre post-test control group. The population of the research is theentire learners in the class XI SMA Negeri 1 Pengasih Kulon Progo, 96 people in total. Using simple random sampling, 25 members of XI IPS1 learners are taken as an experimental class and 23 members of XI IPS3 are taken as the control class. Research data is obtained from German vocabulary tests on the participants in pre-testsand a post- tests. Data is analysed by t-test. The results of the research show that tcount 2,494 is greater than ttable2,009 with significance level(α) 0.05 and df=46. This demonstrates a significant difference of achievement in German vocabulary learning ofgrade XI students of SMA Negeri 1 PengasihKulonProgo, who are taught using crossword puzzles media and that of those who are taught with conventional media. The average value of post-test experiment class is 77,20, is greater than control class of 71,63 weighing the effectiveness of 8,8%. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of crossword puzzle media on German vocabulary of learners in the class XI SMA Negeri 1 Pengasih Kulon Progo is more effective than the use of conventional media.
