THE FEMALE MARGINALIZATION AND MALE DETERMINATION AGAINST WOMAN IN JOHANN WOLFGANG VON GOETHE'S FAUST
Abstract
This study aimed to describe the forms of male domination of the female characters in the drama Faust I and to describe the forms of marginalization of women in Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s drama, Faust I. The data source of this study is the drama Faust I by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, published by Diogenes Verlag in 1982. Data collection is done by reading and recording techniques. The main instrument of this research are the author's own (human instrument). Data were analyzed with descriptive-qualitative techniques. The validity of the data obtained through semantic validity An expertjudgment. Reliability is done with the intra-rater andinter-rater. The results of the study are as follows: (1) The forms of marginalization of women in the play Faust I consists of: marginalization in figure Margarete, marginalization in the figure Frau Marthe, and marginalization in figure Bärbelchen. This marginalization occurs within the family, communities, economics, and religion field. (2) The forms of domination male characters to female characters in the play Faust I includes: (a) the dominance of the character Faust against Margarete; (b) the dominance character Valentin against Margarete; (c) the dominance of the husband figure against Frau Marthe; and (d) Foreign Youth dominance against Bärbelchen.
