THE CULTURAL SHOCK IN URS WÄLTERLIN’S “WEIT WEG IM OUTBACK”

Abstract

This study aimed to find and describe the stages of cultural shock experienced by characters in Weit weg im Outback's novel by Urs Wälterlin and how the characters in Weit weg im Outback's novel Urs Wälterlin deal with it. The approach used in this research is an objective approach with qualitative descriptive technique. Data in this research were words, phrases, and sentences that conceive the element of cultural shock in Weit weg im Outback by Urs Wälterlin. Data obtained by reading and note techniques. The validity of this research data is semantic validity and expert judgment. Reliability is the reliability of interrater and intrarater.The results of this study are  Hibiscus and Optimistic Phase (Honeymoon Period) which includes the optimism of Urs and Christine to migrate to Australia and their interest in the land of dreams, Australia. Crisis Phases, covering employment issues, racism issues in Australia, adaptation issues with new environments, and Urs concerns in Australia. Phases of Adjustment and Recovery of residential and occupational environments. The Mastery Phase is characterized by occupational occupation, culture, and living environment.
