THE POSTMODERNISM: THE FORMS OF ALIENATION AS THE IMPACT OF MODERNISM IN ROBERT SEETHALER’S ”EIN GANZES LEBEN“

Abstract

The aim of this study is to describe the forms of alienation as the impact of modernism in Robert Seethaler’s “Ein ganzes Leben” in the perspective of the postmodernism.The data analysis occupied descriptive qualitative technique. The approach of this study is postmodernism approach using the theory of the alienation of Karl Marx. The data of the study are sentences in Robert Seethaler’s “Ein ganzes Leben”, which contain the aspects of the forms of an alienation. The data source of this study is novel Ein ganzes Leben written by Robert Seethaler and published by Wilhelm Goldmann Verlag München, 2016. The data were collected through reading and note-taking. The validity of the data was obtained through the semantic validity and expert judgement. The reliability of the data was attained through the semantic; intrarater and interrater reliability. The results of the study are: Egger experiences an alienation process as an impact of capitalism. Egger’s alienation feelings are: (a) The alienation of the product: Egger has no right to the product that he has produced, Egger only makes a part of the entire production process. (b) The alienation from work: Egger is working under pressure, has no own opinion. (c) The alienation of the self: Egger has low sensitivity to the environment, Egger’s life unlike other normal human beings. (d) The alienation from society: Egger is isolated by the society and Egger’s death is unrecognized.
