THE PERSONALITY OF ERIKA KOHUT, THE MAIN CHARACTER IN ELFRIEDE JELINEK’S DIE KLAVIERSPIELERIN: A LITERATURE PSYCHOANALYSIS

Abstract


The purpose of this research is to describe the personality structure, personality dynamics, and defense mechanism of the main character Erika Kohut in Elfriede Jelinek’s Die Klavierspielerin through a literature psychoanalysis. The data source of this research is the novel Die Klavierspielerin from Elfriede Jelinek works published by Rororo (Rowohlt Taschenbuch Verlag GmBH) in 2005. Data obtained by the technique of reading log. Data analysis technique used is descriptive qualitative structural approach. The validity of the data obtained by the semantic validity and consulted with experts (expert judgment). Reliability is used intrarater reliability and interarter. The results of this research indicate the personality structure of Erika Kohut consists of Id, Ego, and Superego. Id affect Erika to pursue her satisfaction with Klemmer. Id also affect Erika in fulfilling sexual satisfaction with self-injury using a razor. The personality dynamics of the main character Erika Kohut consists of sexual encouragement, aggression encouragement, moral anxiety, and neurosis anxiety. The sexual encouragement is dominated by Id system like narcissism, sadism, and masochism. Agression encouragement appear due to rejection by Klemmer. Defense mechanisms such as repression, diversion by doing annoyance at the train, and sublimation by spending time with the music.
