AN ANALYSIS OF THE FAIRYTALES OF “MARIENKIND” AND”ASCHENPUTTEL” BASED ON LEVI-STRAUSS’ STRUCTURALISM

Abstract

This study aims to describe (1) surface structure and (2) deep structure in the fairytales Marienkind and Aschenputtel. Theory used in this research is the theory of structuralism Levi-Strauss. Data source of this study is fairytales Marienkind and Aschenputtel on a collection os fairytales Die Mӓrchen der Brüder Grimm. Descriptive qualitative technique is used to analyze the data. The results of this study are. (1) Surface structure (miteme) on (a) Marienkind are: a woman (Jungfrau Maria) gives a command, a man (loggers)/a girl runs a command, a king/a girl feels amazed, a woman (Jungfrau Maria)/a king asks, a woman (Jungfrau Maria) gives punishment, a king/a woman (Jungfrau Maria) invites/bring to a place, a queen gives birth, public figures accuse, (b) Aschenputtel are: a girl (Aschenputtel) runs a command, a man (Aschenputtels father)/a girl (Aschenputtel) goes somewhere, a girl (Aschenputtel) cries, girls (1st and 2nd half sister)/a women (stepmother) give/s a command, a bird/a man (Aschenputtels father) helps, girls (Aschenputtel, 1st and 2nd half sister) pleased, a bird gives a dress and shoes, a prince dance, a girl (Aschenputtel) escapes, a bird shouts something. (2) Deep structure (binary opposition) on (a) Marienkind are: obdient >< against, mother >< child, get something >< lose something, believe >< distrust, (b) Aschenputtel are: good >< bad, stepmother/half sister >< mother/sister, succeed >< failed, straight heart ><  fraudulent , man >< woman, lies >< truth.
