Abstract

This study aimed to find out: 1) the difference in the learning motivation
between the students using the talking chips learning technique and those using
the co-op co-op technique in Social Studies learning, and 2) the difference in the
learning activities between the students using the talking chips learning technique
and those using the co-op co-op technique in Social Studies learning in Grade VII
of SMP Negeri 2 Kalasan.
This was a quasi-experimental study with the nonequivalent multiplegroup
design, using two experimental classes. The research population comprised
all Grades VII of SMP Negeri 2 Kalasan while the sample consisted of Grades VII
D and VII E. The sample was selected by means of the purposive sampling
technique. The data were collected by questionnaires and observations. The
instrument validity was assessed in terms of the content and construct validities.
The tests of analysis assumptions were tests of normality and homogeneity while
the hypothesis testing used the t-test.
The results of the study were as follows. (1) There was a significant
difference in the learning motivation between the students in the class using the
co-op co-op learning technique and those using the talking chips technique. The
significant difference in the learning motivation was indicated by the results of the
t-test: tobserved > ttable, namely tobserved = 2.139 > ttable = 1.998. (2) There was a
significant difference in the learning activities between the students in the class
using the co-op co-op learning technique and those using the talking chips
technique. The significant difference in the learning motivation was indicated by
the results of the t-test: tobserved > ttable, namely tobserved = 2.450 > ttable = 1.998.
Based on the results, it can be concluded that experimental class 2 has better
results than experimental class 1, both in the learning motivation aspect and in
the learning activity aspect.
