Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan membaca permulaan menggunakan media kartu kata bergambar siswa kelas I di SD Kanisius Wirobrajan 1 Kecamatan Wirobrajan Yogyakarta. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian tindakan kelas. Desain penelitian menggunakan model Kemmis dan Taggart yang terdiri 2 siklus. Subjek penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas I SD Kanisius Wirobrajan I sebanyak 36 siswa yang terdiri 21 siswa laki-laki dan 15 siswa perempuan. Obyek penelitian ini adalah peningkatan kemampuan membaca permulaan melalui media kartu kata bergambar. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan tes membaca yaitu penilaian observasi dengan daftar checklist, metode wawancara, dan metode dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan pembelajaran menggunakan kartu kata bergambar dapat meningkatkan proses dan kemampuan membaca permulaan siswa kelas I SD Kanisius Wirobrajan 1. Peningkatan rerata kemampuan membaca permulaan dapat dilihat dari meningkatnya pra tindakan siswa pada kriteria baik sebesar 33,33 mengalami peningkatan 8,33 pada siklus I menjadi 41,45 dan pada siklus II meningkat sebesar 52,78, yang kondisi awal 44,45 menjadi 86,11.

Abstract

This study aims to improve early reading skills using the method of picture word card  for grade I of SD Kanisius Wirobrajan 1, which is located in Wirobrajan Subdistrict,Yogyakarta City. The study represents a classroom action research. It adopts the Kemmis and Taggart model which consists of 2 (two) phases. The subjects in this study were 36 grade I students of SD Kanisius Wirobrajan1, comprising 21 male and 15 female students. The object of this study was improvement on early reading skills achieved through the picture word card method. Data were collected by conducting reading tests, i.e. observational assessment with the help of checklist, and using interview as well as documentation methods. Improvement on the students’ early reading skills can be seen from the increasing percentage of  students belonging to the good category, i.e. an increase of 8.33% from 33.33% prior to the classroom action to 41.66% in the first phase and an increaseby 52,78% of 44.45% to 86.11% during the second phase. Therefore, learning activities in this respect can be said to be successful since the percentage of students possessing early reading skills that are rated good are ≥ 80%.
