Junior High Schools Students’ Perception about Cyberbullying and the Role of PPKn Teachers in the Cyberbullying Phenomenon in Sleman

Abstract


ABSTRACT

This study aims to reveal the perceptions of junior high school students about cyberbullying in Sleman and uncover the role of PPKn teachers in the phenomenon of cyberbullying in Sleman.

This study is a combination research with sequential explanatory model. The population of quantitative research are all junior high school students in Sleman with the total of 104 schools. The sampling technique is using cluster proportional random sampling technique, so the sample in this research are grade 8 students from SMP N 1 Sleman, SMP N 3 Berbah, SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Depok, SMP Angkasa Adisutjipto, and SMP Santo Alosius Turi totaling 142 students. Data collection technique in the quantitative research is using questionnaire. The validity of perception questionnaire is being tested using product moment correlation formula and the reliability is tested by Alpha Cronbach formula with the result of r: 0,641. Data analysis technique is done by statistical percentage technique. The qualitative research in the determination of the subject is using purposive technique and resulted in 5 PPKn teachers in those 5 schools. Data collection technique in this research is using interview. The data validity is checked by crosscheck and the data is analyzed using inductive analysis.

Conclusion of this study, 1. The result of students’ perception of cyberbullying in Sleman shows: a) the majority of junior high school students in Sleman have medium and high perception of cyberbullying as many as 52 people (37%) and 48 (34%), b) the average of private junior high school students tend to have the perception of cyberbullying in a very high category, c) female students have a higher perception in cyberbullying than male students and 2) the result of PPKn teachers’ role are, a) preventively the PPKn teachers have a direct role in dealing with cyberbullying phenomenon in Sleman, b) curatively the PPKn teachers do not have a direct role in dealing with cyberbullying phenomenon however, they act as an informer or the reporting to homeroom or Counseling and Guidance teachers (BK).
