Abstract


Abstract

This research aims to describe: 1) the values of democracy and nationalism fostered in Civics instruction at State Vocational High School 1 Depok of Sleman in the academic year of 2015/2016; 2) the strategies to foster the values of democracy and nationalism in Civics instruction at State Vocational High School 1 Depok of Sleman in the academic year of 2015/2016; 3) the obtained results of the attempts to foster the values of democracy and nationalism in Civics instruction at State Vocational High School 1 Depok of Sleman in the academic year of 2015/2016; and 4) factors that support and inhibit the attempts to foster the values of democracy and nationalism in Civics instruction at State Vocational High School 1 Depok of Sleman in the academic year of 2015/2016. This is descriptive research employing a qualitative approach. The research subjects which consisted of the principal and the Civics teachers of State Vocational High School 1 Depok of Sleman were selected using the technique of purposive sampling. Data were gathered by conducting interviews, observation, and documentation. To examine data validity, the technique of source triangulation was employed. The data were analyzed using the inductive data analysis technique consisting of data reduction, categorization, data display, and conclusion drawing. The research findings suggest that: 1) the values of democracy fostered by Civics teachers among others are tolerance, respect for others’ opinions, self-control so as not to disturb others, self-confidence, self-reliance, mutual respect, togetherness, and humanity while the values of nationalism fostered by Civics teachers among others areself-sacrifice, unity and integrity, teamwork, and pride of being part of the Indonesian nation;2) the strategies to foster the values of democracy and nationalism in Civics instruction at State Vocational High School 1 Depok of Sleman are affective, cooperative, and inquiry-based instructional strategies; 3) based on the class’s indicator of success with regard to attempts to foster the values of democracy and nationalism, it is revealed that the values of democracy at State Vocational High School 1 Depok of Sleman belong to the category of ‘being entrenched’ while the values of nationalism fall into the category of ‘starting to be fostered’, and 4) the factors that inhibitthe attempts to foster the values of democracy and nationalism at State Vocational High School 1 Depok of Sleman are mass media, human resources, and the environment while the factors that support such attempts include school rules and regulations, the intra-school student organization (OSIS) as well as facilities and infrastructure.
