KESIAPSIAGAAN BENCANA GEMPA BUMI PADA SISWA SMP SIAGA BENCANA DI KABUPATEN BANTUL (SMP NEGERI 2 IMOGIRI)
Abstract
This study aims to investigate: (1) the levels of the preparedness of the students of SMP
Siaga Bencana (SMP Negeri 2 Imogiri) to face the earthquake disaster, and (2) the efforts that
the school makes to improve the students’ preparedness to face the earthquake disaster. The
study employed the quantitative descriptive method. The research population comprised 593
students of SMP Negeri 2 Imogiri. From the population, 186 students were selected as the
sample. The sample was selected by means of the proportionate stratified random sampling
technique and the sample size was determined by the formula by Isaac and Michael. The
instrument validity and reliability were assessed by the Cronbach’s Alpha formula using the
program of SPSS 20.00 for windows. The data were collected by means of a questionnaire,
interviews, and documentation. They were analyzed by descriptive statistics. The results of the
study are as follows. (1) The preparedness of the students of SMP Negeri 2 Imogiri to face the
earthquake disaster is good. Based on the parameters of disaster preparedness, they attain the
highest score in the parameter of the disaster warning system. They attain the lowest score in the
parameter of the ability to mobilize resources. There is no significant difference in the
preparedness among the students of Grades VII, VIII, and IX. (2) The school efforts to improve
the students’ preparedness are made through a variety of programs. The programs comprise the
inclusion of disaster materials in lesson plans, Youth Red Cross activities, and scouting activities
which are well implemented. The socialization and simulation programs involving the students,
all school members, local government, and community are nor routinely implemented. The
facilities such as modules, evacuation maps, evacuation lines, sirens, and medicines to support
the students’ preparedness are fairly complete but are not well utilized. The design and structure
of the school building have been adjusted to the disaster analysis.
