PENERAPAN METODE OUTDOOR STUDY UNTUK MENINGKATKAN MOTIVASI BELAJAR DAN PEMAHAMAN KONSEP IPS SISWA KELAS VII A SMP NEGERI 3 SENTOLO

Abstract


This study aimed to investigate: (1) efforts to improve the learning motivation and Social
Studies concept understanding of Grade VII students of SMP Negeri 3 Sentolo by applying the
Outdoor Study method, and (2) the improvement of their learning motivation and Social Studies
concept understanding by applying the Outdoor Study method.
This was a classroom action research (CAR) study using the model by Kemmis and
McTaggart in which the steps were planning, action and observation, and reflection. The data
were collected through observations, questionnaires, interviews, concept understanding tests, and
documentation. The data were qualitatively analyzed. The research subjects were Grade VII A
students of SMP Negeri 3 Sentolo with a total of 30 students.
The results of the study showed that: (1) efforts to improve the learning motivation and
Social Studies concept understanding by applying the Outdoor Study method were made through
the preparation step, namely the selection of learning materials and location outside the
classroom; the implementation step in which the students carried out direct observations in the
field in accordance with the selected materials; and the follow-up step, namely the learning
evaluation in the classroom after the Outdoor Study was implemented; and (2) the Outdoor
Study was capable of improving the learning motivation and Social Studies concept
understanding of Grade VII students of SMP Negeri 3 Sentolo. This was indicated by the data
from the observation, interview, and questionnaire results showing that there was an
improvement of the Social Studies learning motivation. The improvement of the motivation was
indicated by the average percentage of the students’ motivation from 69.62% in Cycle I to
78.14% in Cycle II. The mean score of their Social Studies Concept understanding improved
from 74.33 in Cycle I to 79,83 in Cycle II. The improvement satisfied the criterion for the
success of the action, namely ≥75.
