PENERAPAN METODE NUMBERED HEADS TOGETHER DALAM UPAYA MENINGKATKAN MOTIVASI DAN HASIL BELAJAR SISWA PADA PEMBELAJARAN IPS KELAS VII F SMPN 1 CANDIROTO TEMANGGUNG

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate: (1) the effort to improve students’ learning motivation
and outcomes in Social Studies in Grade VII F SMPN 1 CandirotoTemanggung, using the
Numbered Heads Together method, and (2) the improvement of their learning motivation and
outcomes in Social Studies using the Numbered Heads Together method. This was a
classroom action research (CAR) study using the model by Kemmis and McTaggart,
consisting of planning, action and observation, and reflection. The data were collected
through observations, interviews, questionnaires, tests, and documentation. They were
analyzed by means of the qualitative technique. The research subjects were Grade VII F
students SMPN 1 Candiroto Temanggung, with a total of 33 students. The results of the study
were as follows. (1) The effort to improve students’ learning motivation and outcomes in
Social Studies using the Numbered Heads Together was made through the following steps.
The teacher divided the students into heterogeneous groups and distributed questions in the
forms of cards, the students were asked to have discussions, and the teacher randomly called
the head number to present the discussion results and conclusions. These steps were the same
as those in the Numbered Heads Together method and there was a modification in dividing
the students into heterogeneous groups. This was intended to make the smart students guide
the less smart ones. The questions were given in the form of cards to make it easier for the
students to understand and to monitor their cognitive ability tests were administered. (2) The
application of the Numbered Heads Together method was capable of improving learning
motivation and outcomes. This was indicated by the results of the observations, interviews,
and questionnaires, showing the improvement of the students’ learning motivation in Social
Studies learning which resulted in the improvement of Social Studies learning outcomes. The
improvement of motivation was indicated by the average percentage of the students’
motivation in Cycle I, namely 67.30%, which improved to 76.85% in Cycle II. The learning
outcomes improved from 73.68 in Cycle I to 78.94 in Cycle II. The improvement satisfied the
criterion for the success of the action, namely ≥ 75. Therefore, this study was successful.
