THE RELATIONSHIP OF THE INTENSITY OF MOBILE PHONE USE WITH THE LEARNING OUTCOMES OF SOCIAL SCIENCES FOR CLASS VIII STUDENTS IN KRETEK DISTRICT ON THE SUBJECT OF SOCIAL SCIENCES

Abstract


This study aims to determine the relationship between the intensity of smartphone usage and the learning outcomes of eighth-grade students in Social Studies subject in junior high schools across Kretek District. It seeks to understand the extent of smartphone usage intensity among eighth-grade students in junior high schools in Kretek District and to determine the average learning outcomes of eighth-grade students in Kretek District. This research adopts a quantitative approach with a correlational research design. The sample comprises 175 students from three schools: SMP Negeri 1 Kretek, SMP Negeri 2 Kretek, and SMP Muhammadiyah Kretek in the academic year 2023/2024. Data collection techniques include questionnaires, documentation, and interviews. For the validity test of the instrument items, the researcher uses the Product Moment correlation, while for the reliability test, the researcher employs the Cronbach's Alpha. Hypothesis testing in this research utilizes simple correlation. The results of the study indicate a negative correlation between the intensity of smartphone usage and the learning outcomes of eighth-grade students in Social Studies subject in junior high schools across Kretek District. The results of the normality test show a value of 0.745 > 0.05, linearity test with a value of 0.224 > 0.05, and Product Moment correlation test with a value of -0.089.
