THE SELF CONCEPT OF THE MAIN CHARACTER OF H. H IN HERMANN HESSE’S “ERZÄHLUNG DIE MORGENLANDFAHRT” A CARL ROGERS’ PSYCHOLOGICAL ANALYSIS

Abstract


This research aims to describe the self concept of the main character H.H in Hermann Hesse’s “Erzählung die Morgendlandfahrt” which contain (1) The real self of the figure H.H, (2) need for positive regard, (3) The ideal self of the figure H.H, (4) congruence and incongruence. This research is a descriptive-qualitative. The approach in this research is a Carl Rogers’ psychological approach. Source of data is the 103rd edition of Hermann Hesse’s “die Morgenlandfahrt”, which published by Suhrkamp Verlag in 2015. Data are words, phrases, and sentences which contain the self concept. The data were collected through reading and note-taking. The validity of the data was obtained through the semantic validity and expert judgement.. The reliability of the data was attained through the intrarater and interrater reliability. The instrument of this research is the human instrument. The results showed that the self concept of the main character H.H has (1) the real self of the figure H.H is shy, responsible, envious, self-consciousness, helpful, fragile and helpless. The figure has inferiority feeling, intransigence and interest in writing. (2) Need for positive regard showed that he wants to be loved, his existence to be acknowledged, his hope and wishes to be understood, his opinion to be accepted, his company pride to be acknowledged and to be treated on an equal footing. (3) The ideal self of the figure H.H is having joy in the positive sides of others, courageous, steady, confident and relentless. (4) The Congruence of the main character are responsible, helpful, intransigence, self consciousness and interest in writing. On other side the incongruence of the main character are envious, shy, fragile, having inferiority feeling, helpless.
