THE MODEL OF INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION COMPETENCE IN DENIS LACHAUD’S “ICH LERNE DEUTSCH

Abstract


The purpose of this research is to descripe the model of intercultural communication competence in Denis Lachaud’s “Ich lerne deutsch” through Model of Intercultural Communication Competence Byram and Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity Bennett theory. The data were collected through reading and note-taking . The data analysis occupied descriptive qualitative technique. The validity of the data was obtained through the semantic validity and expert judgement. The reliability of the data was attained through the intrarater and interrater reliability. The study showed that that two models of intercultural communication competence there "Ich lerne deutsch" in the novel, namely; (1) Model of Intercultural Communication Competence (ICC) Byram consists of; (a) attitudes, (b) knowledge, (c) skills of relating and Interpreting, (d) skills of discovery and interaction, (e) a critical cultural awareness. This model is represented the figures: Ernst Wommel (dominant), Katarina Wommel, Monsieur Farnat, Faures’s family, Thierry Fornerie, Bauer’s family, Madame Ladureé, Dr. Salavoux and Peter. (2) Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS) Bennett put together; (a) ethnocentrism. The attitude of denial of difference, defense against differences and minimization of differences include the phases of ethnocentrism. This model dominated the figures compared with the main character Ernst friends, Horst Wommel, some Pariser and Katarina Wommel. (b) ethnic relativism. Ethno relativism competence extends to the levels of acceptance of differences, adapting to the differences and integration of  differences: shown by Ernst Wommel (dominant), Madame Ginimo, Ernst friends, the family farmer, Katarina Wommel, Thierry Fornerie, and Rolf.
