THE IMPACT OF POVERTY TO THE CHARAKTER OF JEAN-BAPTISTE GRENOUILLE IN THE NOVEL “DAS PARFUM” PATRICK SÜSKINDS: STUDY OF THE SOCIOLOGY OF LITERATURE

Abstract


The objectives of this study are to describe (1) Portrait of poverty in the novel Das Parfum by Patrick Süskind, (2) The impact of poverty to the character of Jean-Baptiste Grenouille. In this study, the data were analyzed using sociological approach. Data in the form of words, phrases, and sentences. The source of the data are the novel Das Parfum by Patrick Süskind published by Diogenes Verlag in 1985. Data obtained by the technique of reading log and library research. The research instrument is human instrument. Validity of the data obtained through semantic validity and consulted with experts judgment. Reliability is used intrarater and interrater reliability. Data analysis technique used is qualitative descriptive analysis technique. The findings are as follows: (1) Portrait of poverty present in the novel Das Parfum is a Parisian squalid, seedy and smelly. The citizen suffering from various diseases, because they do not observe the cleanliness and health. The citizen living below the poverty line. Their livelihoods are a thief, prostitutes and beggars. (2) The impact of poverty on Jean-Baptiste Grenouille are; Grenouille was living in an orphanage and did not get a decent education, worked as a laborer, and became a killer.
