THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE HERRINGBONE TECHNIQUE IN THE TEACHING OF GERMAN READING STUDENTS AT SMA NEGERI 1 PAKEM

Abstract


This study aimed to find out, (1) the differences of German reading skills between students which taught using the herringbone technique and conventional techniques, and (2) the effectiveness of Herringbone techniques that used in the German reading skills teaching. This study was a quasi experimental with pretest posttest control group design. The variable of this study consists of two variables that were the independent variable and dependent variable. Independent variable was the use of  Herringbone technique and the dependent variable was the teaching of German reading skills. The population of this study was students in class XI SMA N 1 Pakem, total number were 125 students. The sample was selected by means of the simple random sampling technique. The samples consisted of class XI IPA 1 with a total of 25 students as the experimental group and class XI IPA 3 with a total of 25 students as a control group. The data were collected with reading skills test. The validity test was using the items analysis of Sutrisno Hadi. The result from the validity test showed that only 44 valid items from 49 items (rbt = 0471-0678). Reliability is calculated with the formula KR-20 (rtt = 0.950). Data analyzed using t-test. Results of this study showed that the t-test (3.535) is higher than t-table (2.009) at the significance level a: 0,05 with df = 48. Mean difference of experimental class was 6.24 with 11.5% weight of effectiveness. It can be concluded that (1) there is a significant difference in reading skills achievement between students which taught using the herringbone technique and the conventional technique, (2) The teaching of German reading skills using Herringbone technique is more effective than conventional teaching techniques.
