THE PERSONALITY TYPE OF THE MAIN CHARACTER IN HERMANN HESSE’S SIDDHARTHA: A LITERARY PSYCHOLOGY ANALYSIS

Abstract


The purpose of this research is to describe the the personality type, personality problems, and effort to solve Siddhartha’s personality problems as main character in a romance entitled Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse with the psychology approach and personality theory of Heymans. The data source was “Siddhartha”, a romance by Hermann Hesse, published at 1922 by S. Fischer Verlag Berlin. The data were collected by employing the techniques of reading and note-taking. The data analyses occupied descriptive qualitativ technique. The validity of the data was obtained through semantic validity and expert judgement. The reliability of the data was attained through intrarater and interrater reliability. The research showed that the main character Siddhartha has personality type gepasioner, phlegmatis, choleris, apathis and sentimentil. Siddhartha has personality problems schizotypal and histrionic. The efforts of the character Harry to solve his personality problems schizotypal are consistency and fast act. The efforts of the character Harry to solve his personality problems histrionic is change his appearance, when there are no people with him.
