EXPRESSIVE UTTERANCES IN CARL BARKS' “ONKEL DAGOBERT”

Abstract


This study is aimed at describing 1) the form of expressive utterances on Carl Barks’ Onkel Dagober and 2) the function of expressive utterances on Carl Barks’ Onkel Dagober. This study is descriptive qualitative in nature. The data gathering technique was done through note taking and marking technique. Validity test was used to measure its validity, while reliability was maintained trough inter rater and intra rater reliability. The pragmatic equal and even distribution were employed as data gathering technique in this research. The results of this study were 1) there were two forms of expressive utterances between Onkel Dagobert and Donald namely directive literal expressions and non-directive literal expressions. Directive literal expressions were found in thirteen data and the non-directive ones were found in nine data. In addition, the expressive utterances between Onkel Dagobert and Tick, Tack, and Track were also found in two forms namely directive literal expressions and non-directive literal expressions. In this interaction, the directive literal expressions are evident in one datum, while the non-directive ones are evident in two data. 2) There were six functions of expressive utterances between Onkel Dagobert and Donald. Those include “thanking” function which was found in one datum, “expressing sympathy” which was evident in one datum, “complaining” which was found in sixteen data, “expressing hope” which was evident in one datum, “expressing trust” which was found in one datum, and “expressing happiness” which was evident in two data. The expressive utterances between Onkel Dagobert and Tick, Trick, and Track, on the other hand, comprise two major functions.namely “complaining” which was found in two data and “expressing dejected” which was evident in one datum.
