THE MORALE IN NOVALIS “HEINRICH VON OFTERDINGEN” THROUGH THE FIVE SEMIOTIC CODES OF ROLAND BARTHES

Abstract


The purpose of this research is to describe the morale in a romance “Heinrich von Ofterdingen” by Novalis through the five semiotic codes of Roland Barthes. The data source was “Heinrich von Ofterdingen”, a romance by Novalis, published at 2013 by Phillip Reclam Stuttgart. The data were collected by employing the techniques of reading and note!taking. The data analyses occupied descriptive qualitativ technique. The validity of the data was obtained through the semantic validity and expert judgement. The reliability of the data was attained through the intrarater and interrater reliability. This study showed that (1) there are 17 lexias which are containing the morale message: 1) the honesty: lexia 1, 2, 9,11, 14. b) The responsibility: lexia 3, 4, 6, 10, 15. c) the independence of the morale: lexia 7, 17. d) The braveness of the morale: lexia 12, 13. e) The modesty: lexia 5, 8, 16. (2) The semiotic codes are hermeneutic code, semantic code, symbolic code, proairetic code, and cultural code. The conclusion is that the moral messages about the honesty and the responsibolity are dominant. The most dominant of semiotic codes is the proairetic code.
