SOCIAL CRITICS IN BERTOLT BRECHT’S “FURCHT UND ELEND DES DRITTEN REICHES” (A SOCIOLOGICAL LITERARY ANALYSIS)

Abstract


The research aimed to describethe society’s social conditions reflected in Furcht und Elend des DrittenReiches written by Bertolt Brecht and some problems that was criticized in the drama script. The approach used in this study was sociological approach.The data were collected by employing the techniques of reading and note!taking. The data analyses occupied descriptive qualitativ technique. The validity of the data was obtained through semantic validity. The reliability of the data was attained through intrarater and interrater reliability. This study revealed as follows: (1) the society’s social condition in the time of Adolf Hitler’s authoritarian leadership is in the form of undisclosed public opinion as well as the fear and people’s misery in the regime of NAZI,(2) social problems were criticized Brecht among others: (a) economic: the people reject the NAZI government policies that harm people, (b) political: political policies such as the establishment of Volksgemeinschaft and propaganda only for the  Aryan in the form of program Winterhilfe, (c) social: the loss of sense of solidarity, mutual help and protect each other, (d) humanitarian : NAZI soldiers' actions were arbitrary and abusive, (e) religion and belief: the loss of the right to freedom of religion, and (f) education: military-based education and the educational curriculum with NAZI ideology.
