THE SUNGKEMAN TRADITION IN CEPURI PARANGKUSUMO RELIC PARANGTRITIS VILLAGE KRETEK DISTRIC BANTUL REGENCY

Abstract


This research is aimed to describe the myth and the beginning of sungkeman tradition, a procession of sungkeman tradition, ritual of offerings and symbolic meaning that is used in sungkeman tradition, along with the benefit of sungkeman tradition toward the community. This research used descriptive qualitative research. The data were collected by observing-participating, in-depth interviewing, and documenting. The instrument of this research were a tape recorder, a digital camera, dan stationaries. The data were analyzed by using an inductive analysis technique. The validity of the data was gained by using triangulation resource and methods. The research results showed that: the myth and the beginning of sungkeman tradition is: (a) the myth of Cepuri Parangkusumo relic is the memorium place of Kanjeng Ratu Kidul and Panembahan Senopati, and (b) the beginning of sungkeman tradition is the community who continued the first sungkeman tradition since the Mataram Kingdom built by Panembahan Senopati while he met Kanjeng Ratu Kidul. The procession of sungkeman tradition is divided into five section that are sungkeman one, two, three, four, and five. The symbolic meaning of the ritual of offerings that is used in sungkeman tradition is to say gratitude to God, so that the communities are given a blessing of health, peace, and ease to get luck. The function of Sungkeman tradition for its supporting community covers: (a) spiritual function; (b) economic function; (c) social function; and (d) preserving the tradition function.
