ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY TEST OF CARBON NANODOTS DERIVED FROM TAMARIND SEED AGAINST STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS BACTERIA

Abstract


Carbon nanodots (C-dots) have various applications, one of which is as an antibacterial agent. In this study, C-dots were synthesized from tamarind seeds (Tamarindus indica). The objectives of this research were: i) synthesis of C-dots from tamarind seeds; ii) characterization of C-dots derived from tamarind seeds using ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometry, X-ray diffraction (XRD), photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, and particle size analysis (PSA); and iii) evaluation of the antibacterial properties of C-dots against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria under exposure to white light and UV through antibacterial tests. The synthesis of C-dots was conducted using a low-temperature carbonization method. UV-Vis characterization results indicated a distinctive absorption peak at a wavelength of 257 nm for the C-dots. XRD characterization revealed that the C-dots phase was amorphous in nature. PL characterization exhibited an emission peak at a wavelength of 498 nm. Meanwhile, PSA characterization disclosed that the synthesized C-dots had a size of 1,33 nm. Antibacterial test results demonstrated the inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus growth, with the most effective inhibition zone observed at a concentration of 50%.
