Abstract

The development of tourism in Gunungkidul Regency shows its own dynamics that raise various issues, so a sustainable strategy is needed. This research aims to identify and understand the cycle of tourism development in Gunungkidul Regency, including its driving and inhibiting factors. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. Research data were obtained through interviews, observations, and documentation. The results showed that Gunungkidul Regency has gone through three stages of the tourism development cycle, namely the exploration stage (2005-2010), the engagement stage (2010-2015), and the development stage (2016-Present). The strategy applied is consistent with the development of nature-based destinations, culture and community empowerment, with the dynamics of infrastructure development, facilities, and marketing. This cycle is supported by the potential of tourist attractions, synergy between the government and the community, despite challenges such as natural conditions and competition from similar destinations. Understanding this cycle is expected to help design sustainable tourism strategies, especially in waste management and karst area protection, so as to minimize negative environmental impacts, and maximize benefits for the community.
